By post Beatles, do you mean a band that formed after the Beatles broke up, or after they hit it big? If it's the latter, I'd say Led Zeppelin.

I'm going to interpret this as most influential 70s band. The 3 major evolutionary musical movements in the late 1970 were punk, new wave and disco. Therefore I'm going to say Ramones or Clash for Punk, Elvis Costello for New Wave and the BeeGees for disco.

I'm going to interpret this as most influential 70s band. The 3 major evolutionary musical movements in the late 1970 were punk, new wave and disco. Therefore I'm going to say Ramones or Clash for Punk, Elvis Costello for New Wave and the BeeGees for disco.

I'm not saying you are wrong, but linking the Clash to the Bee Gees hurts me. And I kinda like the Bee Gees....sorta.

I'd define post-Beatles as having had the majority of their commercial success after the Beatles broke up, regardless of when they were formed. That way Zeppelin counts. I don't know what to treat the Stones as though.

Speaking of the Stones, even they were influenced by Gram Parsons. Exile wouldn't be the same without GP hangin' with Keef at Nellcote. Any talk of 70's influences is incomplete without him. A true pioneer of "Alt-country", "Country-rock", or Cosmic American Music as Gram preferred to call it. I wouldn't say "most" influential, but a whole genre wouldn't be the same without him, much like the afore mentioned Clash...

Gram Parsons went to my high school. Therefore I'm the reason Exile was so good.

And, yeah, that photo is a little unsettling.

i know alot of you guys are gonna laugh your asses off when i say this, and i'm NOT suggesting they're on the same level as any of the bands already mentioned, but i've read countless interviews with bandmembers who said KISS was responsible for them picking up a musical instrument......now maybe these musicians ultimately went in a different direction musically speaking, but alot of guys growing up in the 70's might've otherwise had different occupations if it wasn't for $immons, $tanley, frehley, & criss.....

Bands/Artists don't necessarily have to be good to be influential. Take Madonna, for example. Please.

a measure of influence is hard to assess...

A few days ago I had the pleasure of seeing Public Enemy. The show was just two and a half hours of intense musical experience, as they played their album "Fear of a Black Planet" in full, plus many other stuff. They were so tight, had the whole show going (with the soldiers etc), Chuck D and Flavor Flave in top form... it was amazing. Rap and hip-hop are not genres I would rarely listen to at home, but there's nothing like the vibe and energy at a good quality live show of this stuff. And you can hear how what they did influence so much stuff today, for better or for worse.

i don't know about influencial, but metallica basically opened the door to the kind of speed metal genre for the public...nwa basically did the same with gangsta rap

For me it's Aerosmith. They just oozed coolness and their sound was so heavy...but not too heavy. A lot of feel and groove.
I'm referring to the 70's stuff of course. And Steven being on Idol is beyond disappointing.
